1.1. These Tournament Rules supplement the regular Kingston District Church Softball League Rules.
1.1.1. All regular KDCSL rules remain in effect throughout the tournament unless specifically modified or superseded by these Tournament Rules.
1.1.2. Any tournament situation not specifically addressed by the regular KDCSL Rules or these Tournament Rules will be decided by the League Executive.
2.1. All ten teams will begin the tournament in one combined round-robin pool.
2.1.1. Regular-season standings determine each team's initial tournament seed and round-robin schedule.
2.2. Each team will play three round-robin games.
2.3. Following completion of the round robin, all ten teams will be ranked according to their tournament results.
2.3.1. The top five teams will form the A Division, with 1st through 5th becoming A1 through A5 respectively.
2.3.2. Teams finishing 6th through 10th will form the B Division, becoming B1 through B5 respectively.
2.3.3. All five teams in each division are assigned a divisional seed; however #4 and #5 must play a play-in game to advance to the semifinal round, as outlined in Rule 6.
2.3.4. Once A and B Division seeds have been established, A1–A5 and B1–B5 become the teams' official playoff seeds. Regular-season seeding will have no further effect on playoff matchups or home-team designation.
3.1. Tournament standings will use the following points system:
3.1.1. Win: 100 points + run differential.
3.1.2. Tie: 75 points.
3.1.3. Loss: 50 points − run differential.
3.2. Run differential for tournament-points purposes is capped at +10/−10 per game, regardless of the actual final score or how the game ends.
3.2.1. Examples of tournament-point calculations:
· 12–8 = winner 104 points; loser 46
· 18–7 = winner 110 points; loser 40
· 9–9 = 75 points each
3.3. If teams finish with equal tournament points, the following tiebreakers will be applied in order:
1. Head-to-head result, where applicable.
2. Overall run differential across all three round-robin games.
3. Total runs scored across all three round-robin games.
4. Higher regular-season seed.
3.4. The central scoring table is the official source for tournament scores and standings.
3.4.1. The League Executive will verify and finalize the standings before announcing A/B playoff positions.
3.4.2. Any concern regarding a recorded score must be raised before the round-robin standings are finalized.
4.1. Professional umpires will officiate all tournament games.
4.1.1. Umpire judgment calls are final and cannot be protested to the League Executive. This includes safe/out, fair/foul, balls/strikes and similar judgment decisions.
4.2. Questions involving the interpretation or application of a KDCSL or Tournament Rule may be referred to the League Executive.
4.2.1. Only a team's coach or assistant coach may bring a rules question to the Executive.
4.2.2. The Executive's interpretation will be final for the tournament.
4.2.3. The game clock will continue running while a rules interpretation is being considered.
5.1. The professional umpire is the official timekeeper for each game.
5.1.1. The game clock begins at the scheduled game time.
5.1.2. The game clock continues running during all delays, including rules discussions, equipment issues and weather delays.
5.1.3. Games will not be extended to recover time lost to delays.
5.2. Round-Round-robin games are a maximum of five (5) innings and are scheduled in 60-minute time slots. A game ends after five innings, or earlier as required by the time-limit provisions below.
5.2.1. No new inning may begin after 50 minutes.
5.2.2. An inning begun before the 50-minute cutoff may be completed.
5.2.3. The regular-season five-inning minimum does not apply to tournament games.
5.2.4. Round-robin games may end in a tie.
5.2.5. In a round-robin game's final inning, the home team will take its final at-bat even if it is already leading, provided its lead is fewer than 10 runs.
5.2.6. If, during that final at-bat, the home team reaches a lead of 10 or more runs, the game will end immediately and the score at that point will be the official final score.
5.3. Playoff games, including play-ins, semifinals, consolation games and championships, are a maximum of seven (7) regulation innings and are scheduled in 75-minute time slots, subject to the time-limit and extra-inning provisions below.
5.3.1. No new inning may begin after 65 minutes.
5.3.2. An inning that begins before the 65 minute will be completed, even if doing so extends the scheduled 75 minute slot.
5.3.3. Playoff games cannot end in a tie.
5.3.3.1. If a playoff game is tied after the final permitted regulation inning, each extra inning will begin with the last completed batter from the previous inning placed on second base.
5.3.3.2. Extra innings will continue until a winner is determined.
5.3.3.3. If a playoff game extends beyond its scheduled time slot, any subsequent game affected by the delay will begin as soon as the diamond and participating teams are available.
5.4. The umpire will declare the final inning before it begins when, in the umpire's judgment, another inning is unlikely to begin before the applicable cutoff.
5.4.1. Once an inning has been declared the final inning, the regular seven-run inning cap is removed for that inning.
5.4.2. All playoff extra innings are treated as final innings and have no seven-run cap.
6.1. Both the A and B Divisions will use the same five-team playoff format.
6.1.1. In each division, #4 will play #5 in a play-in game, with the winner advancing to play #1 in one semifinal.
6.1.2. #2 will play #3 in the other semifinal.
6.1.3. The semifinal winners advance to the Division Championship.
6.1.4. The semifinal losers advance to the Division Consolation.
6.2. The play-in loser finishes 5th in the division and is eliminated from the tournament.
6.2.1. The consolation game determines 3rd and 4th place.
6.2.2. Consolation games are official tournament games and all Tournament Rules apply.
6.3. The A Division Champion is the overall KDCSL Year-End Tournament Champion.
6.4. The B Division winner is recognized as the B Division Champion.
7.1. All tournament players must meet the existing KDCSL playoff eligibility requirements.
7.1.1. A player must have participated in at least 40% of their team's playable regular-season games.
7.1.2. Regular-season games cancelled because the grounds or weather conditions were unsafe are excluded when determining the number of playable games.
7.1.3. Any exception to playoff eligibility must have been approved by a majority vote of the League Executive before the tournament.
7.1.4. Tournament eligibility requirements apply beginning with a team's first round-robin game.
7.2. Eligibility concerns must be brought directly to the League Executive at the central scoring table.
7.2.1. If a team is found to have used an ineligible player, the affected game will be forfeited.
7.2.2. A challenge involving a round-robin game must be raised before A/B standings are finalized.
7.2.3. During the playoffs, a challenge must be raised before the challenged team's next playoff game begins.
8.1. During round-robin play, the higher regular-season seed is the home team.
8.1.1. During the playoffs, the higher tournament seed is the home team, including championships and consolation games.
8.1.2. Home/visitor designations will be shown on the official tournament schedule.
8.1.3. The home team will lead the pre-game prayer.
8.2. The League will provide game balls, bases and home plate at each diamond.
8.3. Ground rules for each diamond will be established by the League and professional tournament umpires and will remain consistent unless circumstances require a change.
8.4. Teams must complete prayer, lineup exchange and other pre-game preparation before the scheduled start time and be ready to play at that time.
8.4.1. A team has a maximum five-minute grace period to field the minimum legal lineup.
8.4.2. The game clock begins at the scheduled time and continues running during the grace period.
8.4.3. Failure to field a legal lineup within five minutes results in a forfeit.
9.1. A forfeit before play begins will be recorded as 10–0.
9.1.1. If a game is forfeited after play has begun, the offending team will be recorded with 0 runs.
9.1.2. The non-offending team will receive at least 10 runs or retain its actual runs scored if greater than 10.
· For example, a 7–4 game becomes 10–0, while a 14–6 game becomes 14–0.
9.1.3. For round-robin standings, the ±10 run-differential cap established in Rule 3.2 applies to all forfeits.
9.1.4. A 10–0 round-robin forfeit therefore awards 110 tournament points to the winner and 40 points to the loser.
9.2. Once 30 minutes of game time have elapsed, if a team trails by 20 or more runs after a completed inning, the trailing team may choose to concede the game.
9.2.1. The actual score at the time of concession becomes the official final score.
9.2.2. For round-robin standings, the ±10 run-differential cap established in Rule 3.2 applies.
10.1. If a round-robin game must be stopped early, the score at the last completed inning will be the official result, provided at least one full inning has been completed.
10.1.1. If fewer than one full inning has been completed, the League Executive will determine whether the game can reasonably be resumed or replayed.
10.2. An interrupted playoff game will be resumed from the point of interruption whenever reasonably possible.
10.2.1. If resumption is not reasonably possible, the League Executive will determine how the game will be resolved.
10.3. If weather or another major interruption makes completion of the planned tournament schedule impossible, the League Executive may modify the remaining schedule, shorten games, or determine final placements based upon completed tournament results.
10.3.1. If the complete round robin cannot be played, the Executive will determine the fairest method of establishing A/B placement based on the games completed and the circumstances.
11.1. Professional tournament umpires have authority to eject a player, coach or other participant without requiring consent from either team's coach.
11.1.1. The League Executive will determine before the individual's next game whether any additional tournament suspension is warranted.
11.2. If an ejected player has no eligible substitute available, that position in the batting order becomes an automatic out each time it comes up for the remainder of the game.
11.2.1. An ejection does not create an exception to KDCSL's minimum legal-lineup requirements.
11.2.2. If an ejection leaves a team unable to field a legal lineup, the game will be forfeited under Rule 9.
12.1. Teams will be assigned responsibility for scorekeeping games in which they are not participating.
12.1.1. Scorekeeping assignments will be shown on the official tournament schedule.
12.1.2. Any responsible person provided by the assigned team may serve as scorekeeper. The person does not have to be a rostered player or coach.
12.1.3. The assigned scorekeeper must be at the diamond and ready at the scheduled game time. There is no scorekeeping grace period.
12.2. The assigned scorekeeper's book is the official tournament record.
12.2.1. Both coaches must verify the final score immediately following the game.
12.2.2. The scorekeeper must then bring the official score sheet/book to the central scoring table.
12.2.3. There will be no online score or sportsmanship reporting during the tournament. Official results and standings will be displayed at the central scoring table.
12.3. Playoff scorekeeping assignments will be based on playoff positions/bracket results.
12.3.1. Where reasonably possible, teams will not be required to scorekeep immediately before their own playoff game.
12.3.2. Teams that have been eliminated and have no remaining games will not be assigned later scorekeeping responsibilities, including immediately following the game in which they are eliminated.
12.3.3. Assigned teams will scorekeep the A and B consolation games.
12.3.4. A KDCSL Executive member will serve as official scorekeeper for each A and B Championship game.
12.4. Each missed scorekeeping assignment results in one tournament-game forfeit by the offending team.
12.4.1. The penalty will normally be applied to the team's next scheduled tournament game.
12.4.2. If the team has no games remaining, the penalty will be applied to its most recently played tournament game.
12.4.3. If applied retroactively, the original result is replaced by the appropriate forfeit result under Rule 9.
12.4.4. Each missed assignment creates a separate penalty.
12.4.5. The League Executive may waive the penalty only for an exceptional circumstance outside the team's control, with majority approval of the Executive members present at the tournament.
13.1. Male and Female Home Run Derbies will be held simultaneously during the scheduled tournament break.
13.1.1. Each team may enter one eligible male and one eligible female participant.
13.1.2. Participants must meet the normal tournament player-eligibility requirements.
13.2. Each participant receives five pitches, and every pitch counts regardless of location or quality.
13.2.1. The participant hitting the most home runs wins.
13.2.2. A tie for first will be decided by sudden death, with each tied participant receiving one pitch per round until a winner is determined.
13.3. Each participant provides their own pitcher.
13.3.1. The pitcher may be any person and does not need to meet KDCSL player-eligibility requirements.
13.4. Normal KDCSL bat rules apply, and the tournament fence/home-run boundary determines whether a batted ball is a home run.
13.5. Male participants will bat from the normal batting area.
13.6. A separate female batting position will be established and clearly marked before the contest begins.
13.6.1. The female batting position may be closer to the home-run fence than home plate.
13.6.2. All female participants will bat from the same marked position.
13.7. There will be no tournament games or scorekeeping responsibilities during the scheduled Home Run Derby period.
13.7.1. Tournament games take priority. If weather, delays or other circumstances affect the schedule, the League Executive may shorten or cancel the Home Run Derby.
14.1. The central scoring table is the official location for tournament administration.
14.1.1. Eligibility concerns and other matters requiring Executive attention should be brought to the central scoring table.
14.2. The League Executive has authority to make decisions necessary to keep the tournament proceeding safely, fairly and on schedule.
